GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum University forward Caleb Hodnett and cross country runner Nicole McMillen have been named the Zaxby's Athletes of the Week. McMillen earns her third Athlete of the Week honor while Hodnett is selected for a first time this year.
Hodnett, a junior from Adolphus, Kentucky, averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds per game in leading the TU men's basketball team to a 1-1 record. He had a career night with his 21 points and 13 rebounds in TU's 73-62 road win at Lander on Wednesday. He shot 9-of-15 from the floor and 3-of-6 from three-point territory. He followed with 13 points and seven rebounds at defending Conference Carolinas Tournament champion Lees-McRae on Saturday. He went 3-of-5 from three-point land and 2-of-2 at the free throw line.
On the week, Hodnett shot 54.5 percent from beyond the arc while also blocking three shots in the two games.
McMillen qualified for the NCAA Division II Women's Cross Country National Championship by finishing fifth overall in the Southeast Regional on Saturday. McMillen is a four-year starter on the Pioneer women's soccer team who had not run a collegiate cross country race until finishing fifth at the South Atlantic Conference Championships two weeks ago. The Pickering, Ontario native covered the 6,000-meter course in 22:29.19 to join Tusculum and SAC Hall of Famer Amanda Musick (2001, 2003, 2004) and Sue Lewis (2001) as the only Pioneers to qualify for NCAA Nationals.
McMillen's performance helped the Pioneer women to a 15th-place finish in the field of 23 teams. McMillen will run at the NCAA Division II Women's Cross Country Championship on Saturday, December 1 at Schenley Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The Tusculum University Athlete of the Week Award is sponsored by Zaxby's, located at 3280 Andrew Johnson Highway in Greeneville. The Zaxby's Athlete of the Week Award honors one male and one female athlete each week from an in-season sport.
