Guervil, Majorova named Applebee's Student-Athletes of the Month for March

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum track sprinter Widchard Guervil and tennis standout Katarina Majorova have been named the Applebee's Student-Athletes of the Month for March.  Guervil earns his third consecutive Applebee's honor, while Majorova is tabbed the Student-Athlete of the Month for a second time this season.

Guervil ran 6.70 seconds in the finals at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships on March 10 to earn All-America honors in the program's inaugural season.

Guervil, the South Atlantic Conference indoor champion in the 60 meters, was the only freshman competing in the event. He qualified for the finals by winning his heat and placing third overall in preliminaries with a time of 6.67 seconds. With the five points Guervil earned in the event, Tusculum finished tied for 33rd in the final team standings.

At the Terrier Relays hosted by Wofford on March 31, the Fort Myers, Florida product set a meet record and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 100 meters, and also posted a provisional time in the 200 meters. Guervil's time of 10.49 seconds in the 100 meters is tied for the seventh-fastest in Division II this season, while his 200 meter time of 21.32 seconds put him in a tie for 14th on the performance list. Guervil also anchored the 4x100 relay team of Jacob Acklin, Xavier Billups and Althiery Leontes which finished in third place with a time of 41.67 seconds.

Majorova went 10-0 in both singles and doubles as the Pioneers extended their record to 16-0 with 12 victories during March. The sophomore from Martin, Slovakia lost just one set at number-one singles during the month, which included a pair of victories against nationally-ranked opponents.

The sophomore lost a total of four games or less in seven of her 10 wins during the month, including a 6-0, 6-0 win against Chowan on March 6. Majorova recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win against 46th-ranked Laura Dean of Anderson on March 15, and beat 35th-ranked Marta Pinol of Lincoln Memorial 6-3, 6-1 on March 21. In doubles, Majorova teamed with senior Franziska Funke for 10 victories, including wins in each of the Pioneers' six conference matches. Playing as Tusculum's number-two doubles team, the pairing of Majorova and Funke did not lose any more than five games in any of their 10 victories.

Majorova owns a 12-0 record in singles and a 13-0 mark in doubles for the Pioneers this season, who are 16-0 overall and 6-0 in the South Atlantic Conference while ranking in the top 20 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II survey in each of the past two weeks. Majorova has a career 27-7 record in singles and a 34-7 mark in doubles in two seasons for the Pioneers.
