Guervil, Guerrero named Applebee's Student-Athletes of the Month for February

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum track sprinter Widchard Guervil and softball outfielder Delaney Guerrero have been named the Applebee's Student-Athletes of the Month for February.  Guervil earns this honor for a second straight month, while Guerrero hauls in his first Applebee's accolade.

Guerrero hit .511 (24-for-47) with two doubles, one triple and one home run, and drove in 10 runs to help the Pioneers open the season with an 8-6 record. Guerrero hit safely in 11 of the Pioneers' 14 games, with nine multi-hit games including four in a row to end the month. Among Guerrero's February highlights were going 2-for-4 with a triple and three runs batted in against Claflin in the season opener on Feb. 9, finishing 6-for-7 with a home run, four RBIs, three runs scored and two stolen bases in a doubleheader sweep at Converse on Feb. 15, and going 3-for-4 with a run scored against Limestone on Feb. 18. Guerrero also went 5-for-8 with an RBI in a twinbill at Lander on Feb. 24, and finished 4-for-7 with two doubles and three runs scored in a doubleheader sweep of Glenville State on Feb. 25.

The sophomore from Elgin, South Carolina leads the Pioneers in batting average, hits and on-base percentage (.500) and shares the team lead with 10 runs scored. Guerrero is tied for second on the Pioneers with 10 runs batted in, and ranks second on the team in slugging percentage at .660. She ranks second in the South Atlantic Conference with her .511 batting average, and is ninth with 31 total bases. Guerrero is ninth in the SAC in on-base percentage and 10th overall in slugging percentage. On defense, Guerrero has started all 14 games in right field and handled 22 of 23 chances successfully with one assist.

Guervil became the first Tusculum track & field athlete to qualify for nationals after earning a berth in the men's 60 meters. Guervil set his qualifying time of 6.77 seconds by winning the finals of the South Atlantic Conference Indoor Championships on Feb. 19, after advancing with a time of 6.84 seconds in preliminaries. Guervil's 6.77 was the fastest of any runner in the SAC this season and the second-best time in the Southeast Region, earning him a spot on the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division II Men's All-Region team.

The freshman from Fort Myers, Florida opened February by finishing fourth in the 60 meters at the ETSU Buccaneer Invitational with a time of 6.81 seconds, after advancing to the finals with a 6.82 in preliminaries. Guervil will compete in the men's 60 meters at the NCAA Division II Championships in Pittsburg, Kansas on March 9 and 10.
