GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum sprinter Widchard Guervil and outfielder Delaney Guerrero have been named the Bojangles Athletes of the Week. Guervil earns this honor for a fourth time this year while Guerrero garners her first Bojangles accolade.
Guervil became Tusculum's first South Atlantic Conference track & field champion as he beat a field of some of the top Division II runners in the country to win the men's 60-meter dash at the SAC Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Guervil, who came into the meet seeded third in the 60 meters with a season-best time of 6.81 seconds, qualified for the finals by easily winning his heat with a time of 6.84 seconds. In the finals, Guervil turned in the best time of the season by any SAC runner as he was clocked in 6.77 seconds to capture the gold.
Guervil's finish bumped his NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying time into 11th place on the latest performance list, and ranks him second among all runners from the Southeast Region. Guervil has finished at 6.95 seconds or better in each of the ten 60-meter races he has run this season, with six of the 10 surpassing the NCAA provisional qualifying time of 6.88 seconds in the event.
The Fort Myers, Florida freshman also competed in the 200 meters for the Pioneers and earned a third-place finish with a time of 22.21 seconds.
Guerrero went 13-for-26 with five runs scored as the Pioneers went 4-4 last week, including a win over 23rd-ranked North Greenville. Guerrero hit safely in seven of eight games, including five multi-hit games. The Elgin, South Carolina native was 3-for-6 in the North Greeneville doubleheader, finished 5-for-8 with an RBI in a twin-bill with Lander, and was 4-for-7 with two doubles, and RBI and three runs scored in a sweep of Glenville State. Guerrero also handled 19 putouts in right field without committing an error.
For the season, Guerrero leads the Pioneers and ranks second in the South Atlantic Conference in both batting average (.511) and hits (24) while sharing the team lead with 10 runs scored. Guerrero leads the Pioneers in on-base percentage (.500) and multi-hit games (nine) and is also tied for second on the Pioneers with 10 runs batted in, while her .660 slugging percentage is second on the team. She has hit safely in six consecutive games which is the longest streak of the season for the Pioneers.
