GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum sprinter Widchard Guervil and basketball guard Sydney Wilson have been named the Bojangles Athletes of the Week. Both earn this honor for a second time this season.
Guervil, a freshman from Fort Myers, Florida, won the 60 meters at the Wake Forest Invitational on Saturday. Guervil ran 6.95 seconds in preliminaries to earn the third seed in the finals, then ran 6.87 seconds to beat out runners from a field that included SAC rivals Wingate and Coker along with Division I runners from The Citadel, Davidson and USC Upstate. Guervil also ran in the 200 meters and won his heat with a time of 22.70 seconds, which left him in fourth place by a margin of five-thousands of a second behind the third-place finisher.
Wilson, a junior from Greensboro, North Carolina, averaged 15 points per game as the Pioneers earned victories over Anderson (74-51) and Queens (68-55). Wilson shot 7-for-14 from the field (3-for-6 on three-pointers) and scored 17 points in the Pioneers' win over Anderson on Thursday, then tallied 13 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the floor (2-for-4 on three-pointers) in the victory at Queens on Saturday. Wilson shot 12-for-23 from the field (52.2 percent) and 5-for-10 on three-pointers, while adding 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game.
The Tusculum College Athlete of the Week Award is sponsored by Bojangles, located at 3240 Andrew Johnson Highway in Greeneville. The Bojangles Athlete of the Week Award honors one male and one female athlete each week from an in-season sport.
