ROCK HILL, S.C. --- A school-record 172 Tusculum student-athletes have been named to the 2016-2017 South Atlantic Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll. The conference had 1,703 student-athletes honored for their achievements in the classroom.
The SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll recognizes those student-athletes who carry at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average and have completed at least one season in the sports of football, women's volleyball, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's golf, men's and women's lacrosse, and men's and women's outdoor track & field.
The 172 SAC Commissioner Honor Roll student-athletes are the most by Tusculum since joining the conference in 1999 surpassing the previous best of 158 set during the 2015-2016 academic year. Tusculum has finished in the top-half of the league in regards to honor roll selections every season in its 18-year association with the conference.
Lenoir-Rhyne led the league with 188 student-athletes on the honor roll, while Tusculum was second with its 172 total. Queens was third with 167, followed by Wingate (160), Newberry (153), Coker (139), Lincoln Memorial (136), Carson-Newman (134), Anderson (128), Catawba (128), Mars Hill (105) and Brevard (93).
"To have another record-breaking number of student-athletes on this list is a great honor for the entire South Atlantic Conference," said SAC Commissioner Patrick Britz. "Our student-athletes, coaches and administrators work very hard to have success in the classroom and on the court/field of play and I am thrilled to recognize this accomplishment."
The SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll showcases the league member institutions' commitment to achieving high levels of success both academically and athletically, as multiple sport-related award winners also garnered the distinction.
Tusculum honorees include two-time CoSIDA Academic All-Americans® Carlie Thornber (women's soccer), Jonathan Spicher (men's soccer) and Franziska Funke (women's tennis).
