Boyd, Funke named Applebee's Student-Athletes of the Month for April

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum men's lacrosse attacker Ben Boyd and women's tennis standout Frankiska Funke have been named the Applebee's Student-Athletes of the Month for April. 

Boyd, a senior from Bel Air, Maryland, scored 18 goals and dished out six assists for a team-high 24 points in six matches during April. Boyd scored two or more goals in five of the Pioneers' six matches in the month, including four-goal performances against Coker (April 9), Mars Hill (April 15) and Lincoln Memorial in the SAC Tournament quarterfinals (April 25). Boyd was tied for fifth on the team with 15 ground balls in April, including five against Coker.

Boyd, who was named second-team All-Conference at attack, finishes his Tusculum as the program career leader in goals (105) and points (138) and set single-season records with 39 goals and 52 points this season.

Funke, a junior from Bochum, Germany, went 9-1 in singles and 8-2 in doubles as the Pioneers won the fourth SAC Women's Tennis Tournament championship in school history by winning three matches in three days. Playing at number-two singles, Funke finished the month with nine straight victories without losing a set, including tiebreaker wins in both the SAC semifinal and championship matches. At number-one doubles, Funke and Katarina Majorova went undefeated in the SAC Tournament after finishing the regular season with wins in five of their final six regular-season matches.

Funke was named first-team All-SAC in both singles and doubles and was honored as the Tusculum Female Student-Athlete of the Year after finishing the season with an 18-9 record in singles and 21-7 in doubles, bringing her three-year singles record to 54-11.
